Itimad Ud Daulah

Agra tourist attractions "Itimad-Ud-Daulah" is a Mughal era mausoleum of "Mirza Ghiyas Beg" and his wife. Mirza was father of empress "Nurjahan" (wife of emperor Jahangir). It is counted among famous Agra tourist attractions which we can seen in Agra city tour. In first look, it seems like Taj Mahal, thus it is also called "Baby Taj". Imtiad-Ud-Daulah location is 4kms from Taj Mahal on eastern bank of the Yamuna river, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Mirza Ghiyas Beg was a Persian who relocated from Persia to India, in hope of improving his financial condition and growth. During that time, Akbar's court was known for important center for trade and business. He obtained service in Akbar's court. He came to India in 1577. "Itimad Ud Daulah" is a title given by emperor which means "Pillar of the State". On Jahangir's succession in 1605 he became Wazir (chief minister). Jahangir fell in love with his daughter, Mehrunissa, who at the time was married to a Persian. When her husband died in 1607, she entered Jahangir's court as a lady-in-waiting. Four years later Jahangir married her. Thereafter she was known first as Nur Mahal (Light of the Palace), later being promoted to Nur Jahan (Light of the World). Shah Jahan married her niece, Mumtaz Mahal and built the Taj Mahal in her honor.

About Tomb

The marble tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah was built by Nur Jahan between 1622 and 1628 in the char bagh that he himself had laid out. Stylistically, this is the most innovative 17th century Mughal building and marks the transition from the robust, red sandstone architecture of Akbar to the sensuous refinement of Shah Jahan's Taj Mahal. This title is given by Jahangir. The tomb of Itmad-ud-dllah also known as baby Taj due to it's pietr dura artwork and marble stone. It does not have the same beauty of the Taj but it's arguably more delicate in appereance thanks to it's particularly finaly carved Jali. The small yet elegent marble tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah is lyrically described as a "Jewel box in a marble". The square two story tomb stand in the center of Charbagh. This tomb has four gates. The main entrance was on the East while the southern and northern gates are falls and the western gate is actually a river side pavilion with some unusual decoration on the ceiling. The star feature of the tomb are the marble screens, pietra dura artwork and the tomb chamber itself. It is having four hexagonal towers on each corner, having height of 13 meters. Here cenotaphs of Mirza Ghiyas Beg and his wife are side by side. This system has been taken in Taj Mahal also, where we can find cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, side by side. It symbolizes that pair will remain with each other, even after death.
