Colonial Agra

Agra tourism Agra is a historical and culture city of Uttar Pradesh in India. Agra is better known as the city of Taj Mahal and for the Mughal Empire. But Agra isn't just about the Taj Mahal and other Mughal monuments; it's also a treasure house of colonial structures from the days of the British Raj. Agra was the seat of power for the North West Province from 1803-1857, yet most people overlooks its colonial history. The cantonment area with colonial, early 19th Century bungalows is one of the best preserved in the country and encompasses churches and a cathedral, as well as the post office an art deco building constructed in 1905 whose grandeur reflect the importance of this methods of communication and the telegraph office. The first telegraph line in India was laid from Calcutta to Agra and the first message was sent on 25 March 1854, it took 1hr 50 minutes for the message to be converted from one end of the wire to another.

Colonial History
The British took possession of Agra in 1803, and until 1829, the civil administration of the city was conducted by a Collector under the orders of the commissioners of the Ceded and Conquered Provinces. Between 1834 and 1836, Agra had its own Presidency, the Presidency of Agra, but this was abolished and the city was taken into the North-Western Provinces. The first Lieutenant-Governor installed there was Charles Metcalfe. Agra remained the seat of government for the province until 1858, when the administration was transferred to Allahabad. In 1903, the North-Western Provinces were renamed the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh (United Provinces for short) and under independent Indian rule this province became Uttar Pradesh.

Colonial Walk
Agra isn't just about the Taj and other Mughal monuments; it's also a treasure house of colonial structures from the days of the British Raj. The Colonial Walk of Agra aims to raise the awareness of the visitors, about the city's Colonial architecture and heritage monuments. Personalized, educative and imaginative, the walking tour of Agra highlights the vast range of architectural styles, planning elements and ornamental details, tracing the social and cultural history of the city. The whole tour should take around 4-5 hours. In this tour we will visit the following places:
    The Bungalows of Cantonment:
  • Roman Catholic Cemetery (The Red Taj Mahal)
  • Akbar's Church
  • St George's Cathedral
  • St. John's College
  • St. Paul's Church, Church Road
  • Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
  • Queen Victoria Inter College
  • Post Office
  • Strachey bridge Rail-Road bridges-1860
  • Havelock Memorial Church
Very often this colonial-era architectural heritage is found in the Civil Lines and Cantonments of smaller cities and towns that were regionally important centers during British time. Another urban location for such colonial-era structures is the "old town" or “old city” parts of various towns and cities. This type of structure is mostly along Agra's MG Road and Civil Lines area. There are also a lot of buildings within the cantonment from this period, many of them very interesting bungalows, which will have to wait for a later post. Many of the buildings seen here have been conserved because they are churches or academic or administrative buildings, most still in use.
