Agra Fairs & Festivals

Agra Tourism Agra is a tourism capital of India. Throughout the year tourists visits this magnificent historical city. Visiting this city during festival time is a added advantage as on one hand we will explore its heritage monuments and buildings and on other hand, we have chance to witness how beautifully different festivals are celebrated. Agra has a unique cultural heritage, influenced a lot by the Mughals who had transformed this city into a centre of commerce, art and learning. Due to its proximity to Mathura and Vrindavan, we can also find influences of Brij culture in Agra. The city hosts a medley of festivals. The Taj Mahotsav is conducted to promote local arts and crafts. The Taj Literature Festival brings together the icons of the literary world from around the globe, in Agra. A lot of traditional celebrations are also held in the city like Ram Barat and Kailash Fair.

Throughout the year, there are plenty of events and festivals held in Agra and the cities that surround it. Many of these events are unlike anything most westerners have ever experienced.

Taj Mahotsav
This cultural festival was started in year 1992 and has grown since then. It is celebrated in February month of every year at venue of Shipgram, close to Taj Mahal. Usually its dates are from 18th February to 27th March. During this time, handicraft artists from all over India, gathers at Shipgram in Agra to showcase their art and creativity. Featuring in the calendar of events of the Department of Tourism, Government of India, the Taj Mahotsav attracts a large number of Indian and foreign tourists coming to Agra.

Taj Balloon Festival
It is a popular event organized and celebrated in grand way at Agra city in Uttar Pradesh state. It is a 3-day event celebrated in open space, on bank of Yamuna river in which gas-balloon operators from all over the world gathers to show their artistically designed and colorful balloons. Here tourists have the chance to enjoy ride on these balloon to enjoy aerial view of Agra city, do Taj Mahal aerial photography, see city from different angles which is not possible by car or walk. In evening night-glow concert is organized in which balloon operators show differently lighted balloon in dark sky which offers great photogenic view.

Taj Literature Festival
India celebrates all its fairs and festivals with a great deal of joyful enthusiasm. Organized at Kailash temple in Agra, (12 km from Agra) in the honor of Lord Shiva, Kailash fair is celebrated to memorialize the appearance of Lord Shiva in the form of a stone lingam here in the monsoon months of August and September.

Bateshwar Fair
Bateshwar Fair is celebrated in the majestic city of Agra with great enthuse like the Kumbh Mela. Bateshwar is place lies on the banks of Yamuna, located just 70 km away from Agra and is names so after the presiding god of the region, Bateshwar Mahadeo. Here we can see collection of beautifully carved temples.

Kailash Fair
India celebrates all its fairs and festivals with a great deal of joyful enthusiasm. Organized at Kailash temple in Agra, (12 km from Agra) in the honor of Lord Shiva, Kailash fair is celebrated to memorialize the appearance of Lord Shiva in the form of a stone lingam here in the monsoon months of August and September.

Ram Baraat
Ram Barat is a part of Ramlila celebration in Agra. It is one of the biggest annual events in North India. Ram Barat literally means Baraat Marriage procession of Shri Ram. Every year a new locality is chosen in Agra and is elaborately decorated with lights & flowers. The area is given a major face lift befitting the venue for the divine marriage.

Holi, the festival of colors is celebrated with much glee all over the India. The festivities officially usher in spring, where Holi is celebrated as a festival of love. The festival has many purposes; most prominently, it celebrates the beginning of spring. We are are aware of grand Holi festival of Mathura, which is just 50 kms from Agra. That effect can be experienced in Agra also. Here also public celebrates Holi for more than one day with full of colors and enjoyment. During this time, we can find colorful faces, throughout the city. During this time most of the offices and shops remains closed as they all go for Holi celebration.

Diwali & Dussehra
Also known as the "festival of lights", Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in October or November every year. These are the most important festival in Hinduism. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.

The huge premise of the historic Taj Mahal invites thousands of Muslims every year. Agra is more than well known for its glittering Mughal history that gave this city much of its identity. The grand Taj Mahal stands majestically in the background as thousands of Muslims gather in front of the red sandstone mosque to pray on Eid-ul-Fitar morning. Entry to Taj Mahal is free for all on this day and it is an amazing opportunity to witness the Islamic culture in its entire splendor.
