John Russell Colvin Tomb

Introduction
John Colvin Tomb Agra Fort John Russell Colvin was a British civil servant in India. He was the part of illustrious Calvin family. In 1853 Lord Daulhousie appointed him lieutenant-governor of the North-West Provinces of India. In 1857, at the start of the mutiny, Colvin was at Agra with only a weak British regiment and a native battery, not enough force to prevail against the mutineers. Colvin issued a decree to the native that was censured at the time for its mercy, but it was similar to the approach of Sir Hennery Lawrence, later followed By Lord Canning. Colvin died shortly before the fall of Delhi. He died due to Cholera in Agra fort. During that time, Agra fort was used as military garrison of British East India Company. Due to wide spread revolt in India, it was not possible to take his body, out of Agra fort thus company decided to bury him within Agra fort complex and accordingly they did. Historians often points out the insensitivity shown by that time company officers in choosing the burial location as it is located right in front of Diwan-i-am. Even now a days also, tourists often gets surprised to know that British officer was buried at such location.

This tomb is situated on the south side in the courtyard of the Diwan-I-Aam, where the throne of peacock. It is an open grave with some decoration in stone. Lord Colvin was placed at Agra, as Lieutenant Governor of the North Frontier Provinces. During the First War of Independence on July 5,1857 the British troops suffered heavy loss at Agra because of the aggressive attack of the Indian Freedom Fighters. Lord Colvin who had taken shelter in the Agra Fort died of cholera in the central room of the Shah Jahani Mahal. The inscription on the tomb records that Lord Colvin was born on 29th May 1807 and died on 9th September 1857.
