Wall & Gateways

Introduction
Agra tourism Fatehpur Sikri wall and gateways information is shared here. The town of Fatehpur Sikri stretches nearly 9.75 km from one end to other. The town has a 6 km long fortified wall. This stonewall is made up of rubble and encircles the city from north to southwest. The wall has a 2.5m wide path for passing soldiers. The city which was some six miles in circuit, was surrounded on three sides by high bastion walls, which had nine gateways. The fourth side was formed by a artificial lake which is now dry. The main buildings are on the vertex of rocky ridge which runs throughout in the city. This wall had nine gates namely, Delhi Gate, the Lal Gate, the Agra Gate and Birbal's Gate, Chandanpal Gate, The Gwalior Gate, the Tehra Gate, the Chor Gate and the Ajmeri Gate.

Birbal Gate
Birbal Gate is a city Gate located in Fatehpur Sikri Palace complex. Their are 7 gates in palace complex in which one of them was given name as Birbal gate. He was the only courtier who was allowed to reside within palace complex. It is 1 km away from the Naubatkhana.

Buland Darwaza
Buland Darwaza, or the "Gate of Magnificence", was built in 1601 A.D. by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Gujarat. It is the main entrance to the palace at Fatehpur Sikri, a town which is 43 km from Agra, India. Buland Darwaza is one of the largest gateways in the world with a height of 55 metres. This 15-storey grand entrance narrates the success story of the great Mughal emperor Akbar and was built to celebrate his victory over Gujarat, it was added around after five year the completion of the Mosque. Indicating a perfect blend of Persian and Mughal architectures, this grand doorway serves as the main entry to the imperial complex, Fatehpur Sikri. It was constructed using red sandstone with marble decoration on it. Indiscription from the Quran on the front pillars and remembrance are the highlights of this structure. Among many famous inscriptions, one over the gateway states, 'The World is but a bridge, pass over but build no houses on it.'

Badshahi Darwaza
Badshahi Darwaza or the Royal Door was reserved for emperor to join the congregational prayer. It was situated on the eastern side of the Jama Masjid complex, facing Agra and was the main entrance for mosque. It is in north-east of Buland darwaza.

Agra Gate
The Agra Gate is wider at the base than at the top, higher at the front than the back. Narrow flights of steps lead to the battlements. The four-centred archway at the centre of the gate leads to a square chamber covered by a dome, either side of which, raised above the ground, are deep recesses covered with stucco half-domes.
