Agra People & Lifestyle India is a fascinating country where people of many different communities and religions live together in unity. India is a miscellaneous and compound country. People here reveal the rich splendor of the past. A true Indian has their own culture, traditions and values relative to geographic locations and the numerous distinctive manners, habits and food. Agra is one of the oldest cities of India. Life in Agra is also amazing. As we all know that it has one of the seven (now eight) wonders of the world. People of Agra are calm and very cooperative till we are talking them politely but at the same time if any argument turned into heated exchange of words, we will notice their aggressive nature. This majestic city is a home of diversified people from different beliefs. The residents of Agra have adopted a contemporary style of dressing and lifestyle. The men wear trousers and shirts and women wear traditional wears. The majority of the locals follow the Hindu religion, while a minority follows Islam, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Agra has always had strong focus on education. It was a centre of Islamic learning during the Mughal period; it became a key focus of Hindi literature during the rule of the British, who also introduced the Western concept of education here. Tourism is the mainstay of the income for the people of the Agra, along with the industry of marble inlay, handicrafts, carpets and rugs, zardozi work, garments, and leather providing ample support to it.


The official language of Agra is Hindi; it is the same as the national language of India. Many of the residents also speak Urdu and Punjabi. A few of them also speak Brijbhasa. Agra city is very near to Brijbhoomi region so we can saw clear impact of the brij language. Because of the presence of tourists from around the world in the city, the people, especially tour guides, are also familiar with English.

Local Festivals, Art & Music

Agra has a unique cultural heritage, influenced a lot by the Mughals who had transformed this city into a centre of commerce, art and learning. A variety of colorful festivals are celebrated in this cultural city. Taj Mahotsav held in Shilpgram is a ten-day long festival that hosts an exhibition of crafts, arts, classical song and dance performances. Dussehra, Diwali and the Islamic festival Id is also celebrated with great enthusiasm in the city. The Taj Literature Festival brings together the icons of the literary world from around the globe, in Agra. A lot of traditional celebrations are also held in the city like Ram Barat and Kailash Fair.


Once being a home of the Mughals, the city is widely famous for the Mughal cuisines like Kebabs, Kormas and curries that involve curd, cream, nuts, almond and selected spices. The most popular food item of Agra, apart from the famous Mughlai dishes, is the Pethas made from pumpkin and glucose and is popular all over India. Dal moth is a kind of snack and also one of the specialties of the city of Taj Mahal.

Agra is a beautiful city visited by several tourists from all over the world. Even though Agra is known mostly for housing the marble structure - Taj Mahal, there are several other reasons to visit Agra. There are architecture wonders in monuments and palaces. However there are mini art crafts and marble Taj also that show the artistry of people there. One of the many reasons why people visit Agra is for the wide shopping range available there. Agra is known for amazing rugs & carpets, mini marble structures, glazed tiles, leather and many unique things. Some main markets for the shopping are Kinari Bazar, Sadar Bazar, TDI Mall, J.K. Cottage industries etc.
